Q&A: What is a filing status?

Filing status is a tax term that is tied to someone’s marital status and whether they have children. Filing status determines what someone’s standard deduction will be and whether they receive any specific tax credits.

For federal income tax purposes, a taxpayer falls into one of five categories: single, married filing jointly (MFJ), married filing separately (MFS), head of household (HOH), and qualifying widow(er) with dependent children.
